Sonata for the Fall is a piece of “firsts” for me: the first I wrote without a key signature and the first that follows a specific, non-programmatic form. The work does not adhere strictly to traditional sonata form, adding a third theme before the closing material of the exposition. The piece aspires to evoke a wide range of emotions, from passion to anguish to psychosis. It ends with determination that is quickly followed by a state of uncertainty. Sonata for the Fall was composed for and dedicated to my dear friend Aimon Dwan, whose incredible diligence and preparation made its premiere possible.
