Feathers (2015) was the first piece I composed after moving to Eugene, Oregon, for my doctoral program. I wrote a first draft after taking a walk along the Willamette River bike trail on a crisp day in early October. Duck and geese feathers were strewn all over the ground, and one little girl was excitedly collecting as many of these feathers as possible. My work for solo piano evokes the light airiness of the feathers she collected, and also reflects my nostalgia for autumn in New England, where I spent every fall until the end of high school.
