Like birds in Time (2016)
organ
c. 4 minutes
I composed Like birds into Time (2016) after serving for two years as an alto section leader in the choir of a Roman catholic church. The work intertwines my interpretation of a chorale with more fluid, energetic sections. The two ideas come together in the end for one final exuberant statement of the chorale melody.
The title of the work comes from the poem “I Beg You Come Back & Be Cheerful” (1959) by Allen Ginsberg, whose writing I was very much obsessed with during the spring of 2016. The title is also a reference to Olivier Messiaen, whose organ works were a source of inspiration for this piece.
