Moon (2013)
clarinet in Bb, trombone, percussion (vibraphone, suspended cymbal, tamtam, crotales, glockenspiel, triangle)
c. 7 minutes 30 seconds
Premiered by Alberto Mantovano (clarinet), Tim Carlos (trombone), Clint Cox (percussion)
Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall, Indianapolis, IN, 28 March 2015
As one of the first acoustic pieces I wrote after studying electronic composition, Moon incorporates some of my favorite electronic effects and timbres into an acoustic sound world. The pitch bends and glissandi in the clarinet and trombone create an otherworldly environment, as do the metallic sounds from the bowed cymbal and tam tam. The piece is meant to sound ethereal, shimmery, and meter-less—as if, perhaps, the listener is floating in space.
The title Moon, however, refers to a song my father and I once wrote about our dog in which she “howled the town down.” The clarinet melody beginning at rehearsal letter H and returning at the end of the work is a modified version of this song and was, in fact, the impetus for the overall piece. Moon is therefore dedicated to the memory of Moonshadow, with love.
