The cello always has a way of sneaking into my pieces when I am not intending for it to do so. This piece was no different. My initial drafts of Ooze were for a quartet of low wind instruments, which I planned to title “Lowbrow.” The piece was nearing completion when I brought it to my professor, who suggested that I add—you guessed it!—cello. I played around with his idea, and soon the piece came to be what you currently have before you. The title Ooze comes from the opening and closing sections, in which the music truly seems to ooze out of the instruments.
