Pippin & Peppino (2024)
harp
c. 5 minutes
Composed for the Cleveland Composers Guild 2024 Creativity: Learning Through Experience Project
Premiered by Kailani Farivar (harp)
The Music Settlement, Cleveland, OH, 19 May 2024
Pippin & Peppino (2024) is named after two cats. Peppino (Chan) is harpist Kailani Farivar’s seven-pound half Siamese, half ragdoll cat. Pippin is my own fifteen-pound tabby cat (he’s not that overweight – he’s just a really large cat!). I loved the image of these two cats with similar names and vastly different sizes interacting with one another. This piece depicts these feline interactions, running from the harp’s lowest register to the highest, then landing playfully in the center. The presence of fifths throughout the work is a slight homage to Kailani’s love of metal music and the power chords that are so prominent in that genre.
Pippin & Peppino was composed for the 2024 Cleveland Composer’s Guild Creativity: Learning Through Experience Project. I send my gratitude to Kailani for her creative ideas that helped me in creating this piece and for bringing my music to life.
