Inspired by Shel Silverstein’s short story “The Giving Tree” (1964), Recurrences features two themes, one lighthearted and youthful, the other loving and calm. Although the themes become violently warped as the piece reaches its climax, they finally reappear in their original forms, and the piece ends in contentment.
