Stories, Secrets, and Forgotten Wisdom (2024)
tenor saxophone
c. 8 minutes
Composed for and premiered by Drew Hosler (tenor saxophone)
Disciples Christian Church, Cleveland Heights, OH, 22 March 2024
The title of Stories, Secrets, and Forgotten Wisdom (2024) loosely describes the piece’s form. Little wisps of story fragments build into full-fledged tales, which in turn give way to a twisting, secretive melody. These gestures continue in dialogue with each other and eventually dissipate, leaving behind only a ghost of what came before. Here, multiphonics play echoes of the previous melodies and gradually decay into silence.
The title of this work comes from an episode of the television show Only Murders in the Building, which Drew and I discussed briefly when first envisioning this piece. The episode focuses on a long-time resident of the building, celebrating the dedication and love she has poured into the building throughout the years. She is a “treasure trove of stories, secrets, and forgotten wisdom” and serves as a reminder that the people around us live rich and vibrant lives that we might not be aware of at first glance.
