Three Daydreams (2018)
piano
c. 3 minutes
Commissioned by the Creative Commissions Project
Premiered by Sylvia Van Heyningen and Tori Huang
Watson Recital Hall, Cincinnati, OH, 19 May 2018
Movements:
I. Ball Gown Bash
II. A Day in the Life of a Unicorn
III. Crazy Everything!
The movements of Three Daydreams were composed for three eight- to nine-year-old students as part of the 2017-2018 Creative Commissions Project. Each daydream mixes the particular student’s current technique work with her personal interests and hobbies. Sylvia’s “Ball Gown Bash” reflects her passion for antebellum history and festive town dances while pairing different rhythms in the right and left hands. Tori’s “A Day in the Life of a Unicorn” uses cross-hand arpeggios to depict the different activities a unicorn— Tori’s favorite animal—might do as part of her daily routine. Maddie requested a fast, colorful, crazy piece, and “Crazy Everything!” expresses such excitement through its rhythms, rests, and ever-increasing tempo. The three movements may be played together as a set or as individual movements.
