without (2013)
brass quintet
c. 6 minutes
Premiered by Foothills Brass
River Park Church, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
without was the last piece written during my undergraduate years at The College of Wooster in Ohio, and it is dedicated to my incredible professor and advisor there, Jack Gallagher. The piece opens ruminatively, beginning with solo tuba and slowly adding one instrument at a time. The reflective mood switches suddenly to a faster, rhythmically active section that becomes the central idea of the piece. This theme alternates with a lyrical, passionate motif played mainly by the horn and trombone. The upbeat theme returns once more at the end, and the piece culminates in one final burst of energy.
